Chapter Sixteen

Anton slid behind his desk in his home office and scrolled through his email messages. There were too many to count. He’d been so busy for so many weeks that he’d gotten behind. His phone rang at his elbow before he had a chance to make a dent in the process of shuffling through the email.

Without looking, he took the call. “Yes,” he spat out, assuming it would be Jorge with an update or Viktor with some issue in New York.

“Anton? This is Kevin Rawlings, your father’s attorney.”

Anton sat back in his chair and crossed his feet. “Yes. Hello. Did I miss some piece of paperwork while I was there?” No way in hell was he going back to New York. His father’s accountants, attorneys, and friends needed to stop riding his ass.

They had no idea what his life consisted of, and if they did, their eyes would bulge out of their skulls. But Anton needed to be close to the lab so Jorge could test his blood frequently to see if the antibodies for Hep A were present. As of yet, nothing had shown up, but it had only been three days.

“No. Well, not like you’re thinking. I’m calling about a sensitive matter you need to be made aware of.”

“Go on.” There was almost no way this Rawlings guy could shock him.

“Your father left me a large box of documents and strict instructions about when to open several sealed envelopes.”

Excuse me? Anton unfolded his legs and bent his knees to lean forward. Grigory left sealed envelopes with his lawyer?

“I’ve worked my way through several documents we can discuss later, but the one I opened today is shocking. You’re going to want to see it immediately. Can I scan it and send you an email?”

“Of course. But what’s this about?”

“I think you’ll want to see it for yourself and perhaps alone.”

Holy mother of God. What the hell? “Fine. Send it.”

“Call me back if you need to speak afterward.”

Anton ignored the man. He hung up and shook his mouse to wait for the email.

Two hours later, Anton was still pacing his office—out of his mind with anger. If his father had still been alive, Anton would have killed him. Again. And to think he’d had some level of remorse for essentially euthanizing his own parent.

Sergei Zholdin? Seriously? Of all the mother fucking…

Oh, yes. Anton was going to haul his father from the grave and strangle him.

He suddenly had an idea. He stopped pacing to stare out the picture window of his apartment. It overlooked the Chicago skyline. He saw nothing at that moment however. His mind raced with the possibilities.

Finally, he rounded his desk with his heels on fire and scrolled down the list of emails he’d been organizing when Rawlings had called. One in particular had caught his eye and made him furious.

He opened it, read it carefully, and slapped a hand on the desk. This could work.

Five seconds later, he had one of his men on the phone. “Sir?” Denis responded.
